Dr. Gavin Olsen grew up in Birmingham, AL, and knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He spent much of his youth around all types of animals, and worked as a veterinary assistant while in high school.
Dr. Olsen attended undergraduate and veterinary school at Mississippi State University where he worked closely for many years with equine specialists in the area of reproduction. Although at first he was interested in this field, he decided that small animal internal medicine piqued his interest more, and he continued his education and training working towards pursuing board certification in small animal internal medicine.
After finishing veterinary school in 2007, Dr. Olsen stayed at Mississippi State University for a one-year rotating internship, and then traveled to Iowa State University for a three-year small animal internal medicine residency. Following the residency, he stayed in the area, working at a private specialty practice for over four years. Gavin and his wife (Lisa Olsen, DVM, DACVECC) are excited to join the Charleston Veterinary Referral Center family as it continues to grow.
Dr. Olsen is interested in all aspects of internal medicine, but takes special interest in endocrinology, neurology, and infectious diseases. He is proficient in ultrasound and echocardiography, as well as advanced, minimally-invasive procedures including gastrointestinal endoscopy, rhinoscopy, colonoscopy, cystoscopy, and various laparoscopic procedures.
Dr. Olsen is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), American College of Veterinary Emergency and Cricial Care (ACVECC), South Carolina Association of Veterinarians (SCAV) and the Trident Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA).
While not working, Gavin and his wife enjoy multiple different outdoor activities, cooking together, and spending time with their three pets (2 dogs and 1 cat).
