A native of the Midwest, Dr. Jennifer Howse knew very early on that she wanted to be a veterinarian. Growing up, she was heavily involved in her dog training 4-H club in Michigan. The 4-H club leader introduced her to volunteering to raise future guide dogs for Leader Dogs for the Blind. She raised, trained and socialized four puppies for the organization from middle school through college. The experience taught her how rewarding it was to help people through animals, which confirmed her decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Dr. Howse completed both her undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. After graduating in 2012, her guide dog experience led her to a staff veterinarian position at Southeastern Guide Dogs in Florida, practicing general medicine, surgery and screening for conditions detrimental to a working dog. She gained unique experience in canine reproductive medicine and enjoyed the impact the cause made in the lives of others.
Her growing interest in fast paced emergency medicine, which sparked in veterinary school, led her to pursue a one-year small animal rotating internship at Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Atlanta. During her internship, she experienced a large and varied caseload, as well as valued mentorship that helped evolve her medicine and critical care skills significantly.
Jennifer then relocated to the Washington DC metro area where she practiced emergency medicine at a specialty and emergency hospital, Hope Advanced Veterinary Center. It was only a matter of time that a coastal lifestyle came calling and she was thrilled for the opportunity to settle back in the South and continue to practice high quality medicine with a position with Charleston Veterinary Referral Center. She is grateful to be apart of such a compassionate and vastly skilled team at CVRC.
Most of all, Dr. Howse loves emergency medicine because she is able to provide essential comfort, knowledge and care for both owners and their pets in their greatest moment of need. She prides herself on treating each of her patients as if they are her own. Her professional interests include endocrine emergencies, sepsis, reproductive emergencies, pain management and toxicities.
In her spare time, Dr. Howse enjoys being outdoors with her golden retriever (Leo), being on the water and exploring shops in downtown Charleston.
