Dr. Lindsey DeFalco was born and raised in Sanford, Florida, in a large and loud Italian household consisting of three brothers and a sister. Growing up on a lake, she was exposed to a variety of interesting creatures which helped establish her love of all animals.
She obtained her bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington, and participated in the Pre-Veterinary Club, as well as the local Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The highlight of her undergraduate career was volunteering in Phillip Island, Australia, to help rehabilitate little penguin and koala habitats. While applying for veterinary school upon graduation, she completed a Rescue and Rehabilitation internship at New England Aquarium, and worked as a veterinary/kennel assistant at a local veterinarian practice.
In 2011, Dr. DeFalco realized her dream and started veterinary school at the University of Florida. This was where she developed her passion for emergency medicine through clinical rotations in the field, as well as multiple externships. During this time, she worked as a part-time veterinary technician at a local emergency clinic. To pursue her other passion in exotic and aquatic medicine, she was an active leader in the Wildlife, Zoo and Aquatic Animal Medicine Club, and returned to New England Aquarium for an aquatic veterinary externship. Her extracurricular activities and additional classes allowed her to obtain a Certificate in Aquatic Animal Health when she graduated from the University of Florida.
Upon graduation, Dr. DeFalco completed a rotating internship at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, FL. After her internship, Dr. DeFalco works as an emergency veterinarian in Virginia, and then moved to Charleston in the summer of 2017.
Her passion for emergency medicine comes from being able to see a little bit of every specialty every day from cardiology to neurology to critical care. Dr. DeFalco also loves being there for both pets and their owners in their time of need. Her professional interests include cardiology, endocrine emergencies, and traumas. For her, there is no better feeling in the world than having a critical pet come in and being able to send them home a few days later.
When not at CVRC, Dr. DeFalco is likely to be found on the running trail, underwater in her SCUBA gear, or on the couch with a good book and her fur babies, beagle mix Rosie, and orange tabby Louie.
